Why Cooking is the Most Prestigious Life Skill

It involves food and eating. Both things everyone needs to do and for the most part enjoys doing. You are creating something with your hands. Many people find the ability to make something with your hands as impressive or attractive. You are providing an experience. When you cook for someone, or even for yourself, not only have you impressed them with what you can make, but you have also given them an opportunity to experience what you have made. It requires knowledge. To cook well requires knowledge of different foods, different cooking techniques, different culture's cuisine, etc.

Now let's combine all these characteristics. If you have the skill of cooking, you have the ability create something from scratch using your knowledge, creativity, and technique. You have also provided yourself or others with an experience in an activity that majority of people enjoy, and everyone must do.

I think most people would be impressed if someone makes them an amazing dish. Its why people spend money at nice restaurants and why good chefs are respected.

I think if you want to increase your prestige as a person, your attractiveness, and respect from your peers, you should learn how to cook.

Couldn't agree more. Learned how to cook during quarantine and I know this sounds corny, but it changed my life.

Beforehand I was totally incompetent - could barely scramble eggs. But little by little I became more comfortable in the kitchen, trying lots of new recipes each day/week. Cooking was my way to pass the time / find pleasure in a particularly dark time the world was facing. While it was depressing to be locked inside, I had lots of fun googling new recipes and trying to recreate them on my own. I basically cooked every meal for my family, and I loved doing it.

Now that I'm back to the office, I don't have as much time and flexibility so I order out more. But whenever I have a free hour during WFH or sometimes during the weekend, I go back to whipping things up in the kitchen. My friends, fam, and SO all love me for it.

Highly recommend putting the time in to experiment w/ food. You won't regret it!

I love making lots of pasta dishes, especially shrimp scampi and bolognese. Also, I'd highly recommend buying a slow cooker. I used to be pretty bad at cooking meat, but ever since I got the slow cooker ever dish comes out very tender and flavorful. I especially like working with chuck roast, brisket, and pork shoulder.

My father was a chemical engineer, and also did most of the cooking at home, and he taught me that most everything in the kitchen can be thought of in a scientific manner. Always think of why you are doing things a certain way. Change it up, experiment, and track your results. Over time, discover what works for your tastebuds, and what doesn't. Understand why that is the case.

Cooking is huge. It shows you have finesse in a craft which is universally enjoyed. Being good at cooking will only win you points with anyone whether it's a date or a group of friends. It shows you can provide in terms of food and also shows you care about what you put in your body. People often times scoff at others for having developed culinary pallets as they think it's pretentious, but that aside, having that pallet and being able to create a good dish is incredibly well-looking on you.

I have been cooking since I was a kid and its the only hobby of mine that I have continued to entertained since starting this job. Even if its once a week, cooking a meal for my loved ones has been my needed "break" from the day-to-day stresses of the job.

It hasn't really been mentioned on this thread, but taste testing to perfection is also key in cooking. Taste taste taste to perfection.

And proper use of butter. The French love butter and I generally agree with them.

Never did Take Home Chef. I've watched my fair share of cooking shows though. What does it for me is the competition shows. You want to talk inspiration, that's always been a fun way for me to figure out what I can and would cook. Plus, it's led me to create some enjoyable recipes of my own.

Edit: Just realized - Good Eats with Alton Brown. If you want a good show to watch and enjoy a drink with, that's definitely it.
